Tracksters Record Top Performances at Texas Relays |

Source: BYU Press Release (4/3/99) http://www.byucougars.com AUSTIN, Texas – The BYU women's track & field team recorded four first-place finishes and chalked up eight NCAA Championship qualifying marks over the weekend at the 72nd annual Texas Relays. Earlier in the week, senior Alicia Brimhall won the heptathlon with
an automatic qualifying score of 5,584 points. Junior Kristel Berendson
finished third with a provisional mark of 5,348 points.
Also on Thursday, the relay team of Melanie Steere, Susan Taylor, Lindsay Jones and Treva Bryant won the 4x800 relay in a time of 8:35.29. On Friday, the highly-touted foursome of Steere, Bennion, Bryant and Jones set a Texas Relay and Mike A. Myers stadium record, winning the distance-medley relay in a time of 11:24.00. The Cougars also finished first and second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase. Elizabeth Jackson, a junior from Salt Lake City, won the event in a stadium record 6:33.41. Ormond placed second in a time of 6:41.72. Kirsten Bolm, a junior from Scheessel, Germany, finished seventh in the long jump with a provisional qualifying effort of 20-04.50. On Saturday, a capacity crowd of over 20,000 fans witnessed BYU record
four more provisional qualifying marks in the unscored meet. Bolm completed
the hat-trick, setting provisional marks in the 100-meter hurdles (13.22)
and in the triple jump (42-04.25). Bennion provisionally qualified in the
400-meter hurdles with a fifth-place time of 59.19. Jolee Gillespie, a
sophomore from Colorado Springs, Colo., eclipsed the provisional standard
with a 4:23.42 in the 1,500-meters, followed by
"We're very pleased with our performance over the weekend," said BYU head women's track & field coach Craig Poole. "This is one of the top meets in the country and to compete this well so early in the outdoor season, gives us a lot to look forward to as the season progresses." The Cougars will next be in action at the BYU Cougar Invitational on April 10th in Provo.
