Source: BYU Press Release (3/22/99) SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — With rain drenching the competition facilities at Cal Poly for half the meet, the Brigham Young University men’s and women’s track teams competed against only one full team of the three they came to face. The men’s team, competing without top runners Leonard Myles-Mills and Kenneth Andam, took ten first-place finishes to win the meet with 201 points. Myles-Mills and Andam are recovering from injuries. The women’s team also recorded ten first-place finishes, but came in second with 201 points, one fewer than winner Utah State. Because of the inclement weather, host Cal Poly withdrew several of its athletes, while the University of California withdrew completely. “It was an issue of money,” said men’s head coach Willard Hirschi. “We spent a lot more to get there from Utah than USC did to take a few buses down, and the same with Utah State.” Despite the weather and lack of anticipated competition, both teams turned in some notable performances. First-place winners for the women were Jolee Gillespie in the 1500 meters (4:29.57); Kristel Berendsen in the long jump (18' 5.25"); Kristen McQuade in the high jump (5'8"); Amy Curtis in the javelin (137' 11"); Aimee Nichols in the discus (129' 3"); Emili Lawson in the 5,000 meters (17:40.09); Melanie Steere in the 800 meters (2:10.59); Julie Bennion in the 200 meters (25.50); Elizabeth Jackson in the 3,000 meters (9:48.35); and the 1600-meter relay team (3:50.36). Jim Roberts led the men’s team with two first-place finishes, one in the shot put (58' 2.5") and one in the discus (171' 2"). Other BYU winners were Randy Himes in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.81); Clayton Patch in the 400 meters (48.16); Bryan Lindsay in the 1500 meters (3:51.94); Jeff Wilson in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:08.63); Jeff Taylor in the 800 meters (2:10.59); Matt Adams in the 5,000 meters (14:39.52); the 400-meter relay team (42.44); and the 1600-meter relay team (3:18.26). Next Saturday, March 27, the Cougars will compete at the UTEP Invitational in El Paso, Texas. Team Finishes Women: Utah St.-202, BYU-201, Cal Poly-128, USC-0 (withdrew)
