For the second consecutive season, BYU's men's gymnastics team will compete for the national championship as one of six teams at the NCAA Championships held in Lincoln, Neb, Thursday through Saturday. The Championship begins Thursday with the team competition with the top three teams advancing to Friday's team finals for the national title. Saturday will be the individual finals competition.

The Cougars placed second at the NCAA West Regional Saturday (April 10) to join West Regional Champion Nebraska (No. 5 nationally) and third-place finisher Stanford (No. 12) as the West’s three qualifying teams. Top-ranked Michigan headlines a strong East Region contingent that includes No. 2 Ohio State and No. 4 Penn State.

The Cougars, who entered regional competition ranked 11th nationally, finished fifth at last year’s national championship after a second-place finish at the West Regional. This year’s Cougar team boasts the country’s No. 1-rated gymnast on still rings in Cortney Bramwell, who has one 10 to his credit this year on the event.

This is BYU’s third appearance at the NCAA Championships. The Cougars placed sixth of eight teams at the 1992 Championships and last year finished fifth of six teams.

“All year we worked to peak at regionals and nationals. I think we will do better than we did last year at nationals. We will be better mentally prepared. Cortney has a good chance to win on rings and we expect to do go far as a team this year.” – Coach Mako Sakamoto
