Source: BYU Press Release (3/19/99) PROVO, Utah – Scoring a perfect 10.0 on still rings, BYU’s Cortney Bramwell led the ninth-ranked Cougars to their highest score of the year while defeating two-time defending national champion Cal-Berkeley Friday 226.05 to 220.10. Bramwell, who is the nation’s No. 1-ranked gymnast on still rings, became only the third Cougar to ever score a 10.0 and the first to do so on rings. When he landed his dismount he said he knew he had scored the perfect score, a rare feat in men’s gymnastics. “I knew it was the one when (after landing),” said Bramwell. “I have been working very hard and it finally came together tonight.” Bramwell placed well in each of the four events in which he competed, tying for second in vault (9.60) and high bars (9.55), both personal bests this season, and finishing third in parallel bars (9.30) . “Cortney was magnificent,” said BYU coach Mako Sakamoto. “I knew it was only a matter of time before he got a 10. This was our best meet of the year. Scoring was tight and we still had our highest score of the year.” California’s Alex Nissen won the all-around competition, scoring a 56.70 on the six events to outpace BYU’s Guard Young who totaled 56.70. Other event winners included BYU’s Rob Rimpini on high bar (9.75) and pommel horse (9.70) and Young on vault (9.65) and parallel bars (9.55). California’s Tal Moscovitz equaled Rimpini 9.70 first-place score on pommel horse and also claimed the best score of the night on the floor exercise with a 9.65. With the win, BYU prepares for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship next week in Norman, Okla., before hosting the NCAA West Regionals April 10.
