The ninth-ranked BYU men’s gymnastics team hosts two-time defending national champion and 10th-rated Cal Berkeley Friday at 7 p.m. in Smith Fieldhouse. The meet will be both teams’ final regular season competition. California is coming off a season-high score of 225.225.

The Cougars are also coming off a season-high performance of 226.0 in a win over No.8 Nebraska and No.6 Michigan State. The teams have already met twice this season (both BYU wins), most recently at the Peter Vidmar Invitational where the Cougars defeated Cal 224.85-219.70.

COUGARS’ LAST ACTION

Guard Young won the allaround competition as the Cougars had their best score of the year, 226.0, to defeat then Nebraska (225.95) and Michigan State (225.675) in the Smith Fieldhouse. Young, ranked 12th in the nation in the all around, took the men’s all around with a 57.2. BYU’s Dmitry Kolodazhnyy, who won the parallel bars with a 9.75, finished fifth in the allaround at 55.6. The other event winner for BYU was Cortney Bramwell, who maintained his No. 1 ranking on still rings with an impressive 9.9.

STANDING GUARD

Olympic hopeful Guard Young has been the Cougars’ consistent leader this year and is currently ranked 12th in the nation overall. Young, who scored his best all-around total of the year in BYU last meet (57.20), is the son of Wayne Young, who was the NCAA All-Around Champion while at BYU and a former BYU coach. Guard is within reach of making the US Olympic Team in 2000 – something his father did in 1976.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH

“This is our last regular season home meet, so we plan to give some of our seniors a chance to compete in more events. California is the two-time defending national champions. We are working very hard, and our team chemistry is great. We want to have everybody peaking in time for regionals and nationals.”
