August 17, 2000 By CougarFan.com Staff What ever happened to Jaron Dabney, the 1997 WAC Freshman of the Year, that was expelled from BYU because of Honor Code violations? He has transferred closer to his Sealy, Texas home to a small school in Huntsville, Texas called Sam Houston State University. On Sunday, Dabney all off a sudden became the starting tailback for the Sam Houston State Bearkats. Joe Rauls, the first team running back, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and may have ended his season. The Huntsville Item reports that the starting job "will likely fall to junior Jaron Dabney, a transfer from Brigham Young." The report continues: "[Dabney] went to high school in Sealy and was named Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 1997. "Dabney combined for 1,046 yards on kickoff and punt returns at BYU his freshman year. He was an all-state running back for coach T.J. Mills at Sealy and played on three consecutive state championship teams. "Dabney's a fine player," Bearkats head coach Ron Randleman boasted. "The thing that it really hurts, though, is we felt we had two real quality backs that were both starters and that Dabney would be able to do all of our return work. Then, he and Joe would split the running back (job). "So when you lose one, then you have to take Dabney out of some of the return work and you have to try to get someone else ready and we don't have that someone else ready right now. That's the challenge that we've got." The Huntsville Item can be found at: http://itemonline.com Suggest news! (news@CougarFan.com) Maintainer: webmaster@CougarFan.com |
