Utah Tops Baseball Team 11-9 |

May 13, 1999 PROVO–Former BYU pitcher Brett McDermaid threw 170 pitches and struck out 11 Cougars Thursday to lead Utah to an 11-9 victory. The senior McDermaid, who pitched his first two years at BYU, scattered
13 hits in eight-plus innings to pick up his third win of the season.
He got timely hitting from his fellow Utes who belted five home runs.

First baseman Ryan Johnerson hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to
chase Curtis Rodriguez from the mound and give Utah a 7-6 advantage.
Utah took the initial lead when Adam Castleton hit a solo homer in the
first. Teammate
Gary Johnson hit a three-run homer in the first to give BYU the lead and he added to it with a two-run blast in the third to put the Cougars up 5-1. Teammate Ryan Pond hit his 22nd homer of the season, a solo in the fifth. The Cougars made a last-ditch rally in the ninth inning when they scored
one run off an RBI single from pinch hitter George Gourley, whose brother
T.R. is on the Ute squad. BYU stranded two runners in the ninth when

Utah’s record improves to 22-28 overall and 8-18 in the Western Athletic Conference, while BYU is 24-31 and 10-17. The two teams meet again on Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at noon.
