Source: BYU Press Release (4/16/99) http://www.byucougars.com PROVO–San Diego State’s 23-14 victory Friday over BYU marked the first time in over 40 years that an opponent has won a three-game league series in Provo. The Aztecs took advantage of four Cougar errors and clubbed six home runs Friday as they batted through their order in the second, fourth and sixth innings. BYU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run homer by Gary Johnson and unearned runs scored by Ryan Pond and Isaac Iorg. In the second inning, however, SDSU scored six unearned runs, ended by Robert Womack’s solo homer. Womack then hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning, followed by back-to-back solo shots by teammates Brandon Rogers and Ben Leuthard in the middle of a Cougar pitching change. In the sixth inning Edgar Gonzales belted a three-run homer in the sixth and Tyler Echelbarger hit a two-run dinger in the seventh. BYU got a two-run homer in the ninth from reserve third baseman Kevin Bills. The Cougars closed the gap to 13-9 in the fifth inning when Iorg was singled in by Josh Fulton and Mark Smith was doubled in by Ryan Freeman. Freeman was four of five on the day, while teammate Gary Johnson also saw the ball well in a three of five effort, including a ninth-inning double. SDSU’s big guns were Echelbarger and Womak each with four RBI and Edgar Gonzales with six RBI. The Cougars, now 19-25 overall and 7-13 in the Western Athletic Conference, are idle because of finals and graduation until next Friday when they play at Oklahoma State for three non-conference games. SDSU, now 22-21 and 9-9, next plays two non-league games at Wichita State beginning Tuesday. San Diego St. 23, BYU 14 SDSU 070 606
